Chapter 45 – Playing with the Immortal

“Ye Shuangluo, your martial skills are truly exceptional. You actually managed to kill the emperor.”

A young man clapped his hands as he walked over.

The young man had an unremarkable appearance, the kind that would blend into any crowd.

But as he got closer, a thought appeared in everyone’s mind.

Why did I think he was an ordinary person?

“…Should I call you Brother Shan Ren, or should I, like everyone else, kneel and address you as Immortal?”

Ye Shuangluo’s voice was not loud, but it left all the Taoists around him in shock.

They stared at the young man in horror. He was an Immortal? The Immortal who only existed in legends?

“When did you find out?”

“Actually, I had my suspicions not long after we met.”

“Why? I believe I didn’t reveal any flaws.”

“Left ‘Ren,’ right ‘Shan,’ together they form the character for ‘Immortal.’”

Clap, clap, clap!

Shan Ren, no, the Immortal, couldn’t help but clap again.

“Such keen insight and terrifying observation skills. Indeed, even among insects, you are the finest.”

“Heh.”

Ye Shuangluo sneered coldly. Arrogant, as expected of a legendary Immortal.

The Immortal wasn’t carrying his bamboo basket this time, and the small snake that was always with him was now coiled around his neck.

Interestingly, the snake, which was originally the length of a finger, had grown to the size of a bowl.

Perhaps because of its larger body, the dragon horns on its head, which were previously inconspicuous, were now clearly visible.

“If I’m not mistaken, it must be the owner of the dragon scale mentioned in the last chapter by Gao Yangzi.”

The Immortal neither confirmed nor denied it. He casually reached out and summoned the divine stone from the forbidden area of the palace.

Seeing the divine stone, the members of the Thieves’ Guild became uneasy. The leading Taoist respectfully said,

“Great Immortal, years ago you decreed that our Taoist Alliance be renamed the Thieves’ Guild and that we could only revert to our original name after stealing the divine stone.

Today, I dare to ask, what was your intention behind this?”

The Immortal stroked the head of the snake coiled around his neck and nonchalantly replied,

“There was no particular intention. I just found it amusing.”

Upon hearing this, the leading Taoist neither collapsed nor became angry.

He had long suspected this answer but was unwilling to believe it. He didn’t want to believe that the efforts of the Taoist Alliance over the years were just a joke to amuse the Immortal.

“People say that Gao Yangzi angered you back then, so you decreed that we change our name to the Thieves’ Guild.”

“Gao Yangzi… he was an interesting insect.”

Despite the Immortal’s insult, the Taoist’s expression remained unchanged.

In the calmest tone, he said,

“My name is Ziyang. Gao Yangzi was my grandmaster. I want to tell you on his behalf that you are nothing but scum, unworthy of anyone’s worship.”

The Immortal did not get angry. He casually flicked his finger, and Ziyang’s body instantly exploded into countless blood droplets suspended in the air.

“Why are you insects always so annoying? Gao Yangzi was like this, and so are you.”

Although the Immortal had just killed the disrespectful Taoist Ziyang, his gaze remained fixed on Ye Shuangluo.

Ye Shuangluo had witnessed the entire scene and gleaned some information from their conversation.

“Gao Yangzi found you in the end, didn’t he?”

The Immortal’s eyes showed a hint of surprise, but he nodded.

“Yes, he found me in the end, hoping I would solve the calamities plaguing the world.”

“Is there more to the story?” Ye Shuangluo added, “There should be more to the book ‘Immortal’s Musings,’ right? Since he found you.”

The Immortal looked at him strangely but eventually took out a book from his space ring and tossed it to him.

[Collectible: Gao Yangzi’s ‘Immortal’s Musings’]

[Effect: When placed in the collection room, all Taoists you encounter will have a +5 innate favorability towards you.]

Ye Shuangluo hadn’t expected to obtain a collectible from this, a pleasant surprise indeed.

He skimmed through the book, learning about the final chapter of Gao Yangzi’s life.

“You let him go in the end, just so he could die with a shattered faith and regrets?”

“Yes! Don’t you find it interesting? Giving someone hope and then ruthlessly taking it away.”

Madman, a complete madman.

No more words were needed. Ye Shuangluo marked him with a Kill Order.

Even though Ye Shuangluo knew he stood no chance against this man.

Facing Ye Shuangluo’s attack, the Immortal didn’t even lift a finger. He was sent flying by an invisible force.

“Why bother? How could an insect possibly defy the will of the Creator?

Brother Ye, don’t worry, I won’t kill you. I’ll use the remaining divine stone to transform your body, forging an immortal body far superior to that foolish emperor you killed.”

Ye Shuangluo said nothing, gripping his long blade tightly, and charged again.

The Immortal stood still, not even bothering to move.

To him, everything Ye Shuangluo did was futile.

Perhaps to make Ye Shuangluo despair, he didn’t immediately repel him this time.

Instead, he stood there, letting Ye Shuangluo’s strikes hit his shield.

In Ye Shuangluo’s eyes, it seemed as if the Immortal had an invisible armor, blocking every strike ten centimeters away from his body.

Whoosh!

As Ye Shuangluo relentlessly attacked, a crossbow bolt flew straight at him.

Clang!

An ice shield appeared in front of him, blocking the bolt.

Ye Shuangluo reached out towards the direction of the bolt.

The twin fox girls hiding behind the crossbow were instantly enveloped by the Wind Element and pulled towards him.

Giggling!

With one swift motion, he skewered the two foxes like candied hawthorn.

The white fox girl looked incredulous, seemingly unable to believe she was really going to die this time.

The silver fox girl, her sister, showed a look of relief.

[Congratulations on achieving: Demon Slayer]

[Reward: Wind Element Affinity +10]

He hadn’t expected to achieve this in the end, a pleasant surprise indeed.

“How pathetic, Brother Ye. Are you venting your anger on mere animals?”

Clearly, the Immortal misunderstood Ye Shuangluo’s actions, sighing in disappointment.

Ye Shuangluo offered no explanation, continuing to swing his blade.

The Immortal casually waved his hand, swatting Ye Shuangluo away like a fly.

“Ugh.”

Ye Shuangluo spat out mouthfuls of blood, but his eyes showed no despair.

He planted Mortal Kill into the ground, struggling to stand, and asked the Immortal a puzzling question:

“…Immortal, do you bleed? If you get hurt, do you howl in pain like humans?”

The Immortal frowned, not understanding.

But he soon realized, as Ye Shuangluo extended his hand and clenched his fist.

Killing Mark, explode!

Boom!

Five layers of Killing Mark detonated.

Breaker Star’s Power was a good skill, allowing Ye Shuangluo to ignore 15% of the enemy’s defense with any attack.

Combined with the explosion of five layers of Killing Mark, the blast’s power rivaled some of the Main World’s thermal weapons.

When the smoke cleared, the Immortal still stood there, unscathed, not even a speck of dust on his clothes, but his expression was grim.

“Hahaha.”

Ye Shuangluo laughed wildly, his voice echoing across the battlefield.

“See? This is an Immortal. Though terrifyingly strong, he is not invincible.”

“I’ve changed my mind. I’ll grind your bones to dust, imprison your soul in a puppet, and torture you. Don’t worry, I’ll regularly give you a new puppet body.”

Facing the enraged Immortal, Ye Shuangluo knew he would be torn to pieces instantly, with no chance of resistance, so he decided to flee.

“Return!”

As he chanted in his mind, Ye Shuangluo felt dizzy, still unaccustomed to spatial teleportation.

The enraged Immortal nearby suddenly sensed a strong spatial fluctuation, originating from Ye Shuangluo.

Realizing what was happening, the Immortal frantically tried to stop Ye Shuangluo, but it was too late.

He could only watch as Ye Shuangluo’s body became increasingly ethereal, eventually disappearing completely.

“No!!!”
